About the golfpoet

Leon S White
I have a passion for golf gained over many years of playing and also a love of poetry. I have two degrees from Stanford University (’58, ’59) and a PhD from Columbia University (’64). I taught for 10 years at the Sloan School of Management at M.I.T. During my working life I also held executive positions with the City of Boston and Massachusetts Blue Cross. While in high school, I caddied at the Claremont Country Club in Berkeley, CA. I began playing golf regularly in 1984 and have played in Scotland and have had a hole-in-one. And, as of April 12, 2011, I am the author of Golf Course of Rhymes – Links between Golf and Poetry Through the Ages.

Leon,
Thanks for introducing the fasinating world of golf poetry. This is a great website and hope you continue with updating, etc.
I can’t wait for your book to be published.
Just came across your website. I too have an interest in the same subjects.
He says he’s played for 60 years,
Perhaps he’s had too many beers!
He remembers Nicklaus as a kid,
And St. Andrews’ green fees for a quid.
When metal shafts were the latest thing,
Long before Karsten thought of Ping.
Jim: Thanks for the interest and the poem. Leon
I learned of your web page in the WSJ article on The Poetry of Golf.
Here is one I penned while playing Bandon and Pacific Dunes and Bandon Trails.
(If you like this I’ll be happy to share a few others I wrote)
ABandon fears
To thoughts of dunes and trails
Gracing the glory
Of the Pacific.
Great to play with you last week Leon. I love the website and will share it with others who appreciate the links and the lines!
Regards,
Peter Vaz
Some really nice stuff on this web site , I like it.
Great post thanks!
Enjoyed reading your blog and I agree that good golf poetry is sorely needed today. Here’s an excerpt of something I wrote to help me remember the the Rules. Not good poetry, by any means, but it was useful to me. Here I begin with Rule 18:
“And now the juicy part begins
To see who loses and who wins
For he that knows the next eleven,
Will score a five instead of seven.”
Really good site. thank you so much for your time in writing the posts.
